Looking back it is hard to believe it was only 6 days ago when we went to the hospital for our C-section. What a week it was! Here is a short play by play of events:
Wednesday: Aiden was born 1:54 pm. Just a couple of hours later he was taken away to the NICU. His breathing was rapid due to excess fluid in the lungs. We spent as much time in the NICU as possible. Those visting hours are so restrictive. I wasn't able to get in to be with Aiden until I was able to get up which was 2am. So the process of wheelchairing it over to the NICU began for the next several days.
Thursday: This was not a good day. The bad news just kept coming. After much monitoring and tests there was a scare of a heart murmur and hole in the heart, the breathing issues and now jaundice was entering the picture. I was having much pain from my own surgery and not to mention those wonderful hormone surges. Oh I hate crying! Especially with all the visitors. So we sent out the prayer chain requests.
Friday: We still don't have our baby in our arms in our own room. It is looking better however.
This morning Dr. Bruce was saying his improvement was quite remarkable. His heart is fine and normal for his age. He has little signs of jaundice and his breathing is not as rapid. He had his first meal this morning through a tube. Those tubes taped to a baby just aren't right. He accepted the tubes though and @ 12:30 he had his first bottle. When I was able to visit with the doc he said again what a remarkable improvement from yesterday it was and that his lungs were looking much better! Bless the Lord and thank you for all your prayers. We still don't know when we will get to go home yet, but I got to feed him a bottle. The not knowing things is what makes this process so hard. I will be discharged Sunday so that is what we are praying for with Aiden. I couldn't bare the thought of leaving the hospital empty handed.
Saturday: Things continue to improve. They think we will be able to be discharged and stay in the family room. This is a small hotel like room for parents to stay in with their baby the night before they go home. So while he will still be hooked up to the tubes, we will at least be able to be with him all night.
Sunday: We indeed got the good news that we would be discharged to the family room in the NICU. However, his Jaundice is back up and on the rise, so we still don't know if we will be going home as a family or empty handed. Ergghhh! As the day went on we finally got the good news that we could go to the family room. So we rushed our discharge and ate lunch and took things to the van to be taken home. We checked into the family room close to 4pm and we were finally a family together.
Monday: What a night! You really can never be prepared for physical pain and lack of sleep. But no complaints from us...we had our boy with us and only a heart monitor hooked up. Yay, no more IVs! His jaundice levels kept rising though, so we heard from a social worker that he might have to stay BUT NO we got the good news that we could all go home today! Yes! We would be assigned a billi bed (a special light bed to help with the jaundice) and we were able to come home on Monday afternoon . Here's the catch we were in a tornado watch. Ryan was born in the same hospital almost 4 years ago under a tornado watch. I think it is probably an indicator of the type of tempermements they will have.
Tuesday: Just went to the doctor for a follow up on the jaundice. We got amazing news! He is already in a safe zone just overnight being on the billi bed. So just one more night and we should be free from it all.
Pictures to follow...
